I have a love-hate relationship with summer. Especially July.
Inevitably, summer for me -- and July is always the worst -- is a frustrating time, as much as it can be relaxing. Life slows down (because it does) and it feels like it slows down even more because of the humidity. And I find my brain slows down, too. I tell myself now that this is what summer is all about and to just chill. Don't fight the slo-mo reality. Now that I'm more mindful of my sluggishness during the summer, I don't beat myself up about it as much. To mitigate my frustration and creative blocks, I now proactively view summer as an annual opportunity to give myself permission to take a solid break from constant writing and idea-generating. I use this time to explore other things I like to do, or want to learn more about and to open my world a bit more. I see this exploration as a form of zooming out and it usually helps me to see things anew from this vantage point, which can often be pretty exciting.
